Summary

Responsible for evaluating, repairing and maintaining electrical needs and problems for new and existing city facilities; assists with electric systems at city parks, including sport lighting on all playing fields; prepares electric services for special events; conducts preventative electrical maintenance throughout city departments; assists electric department during large power outages and various electric system components; repairs and maintains street lighting throughout the city; performs general maintenance duties and operates and maintains various equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Works with Public Utilities department to hang community banners and flags;

  • Repairs and maintains street lighting;

  • Completes work orders and related reports, including recording materials used and time spent on repairs/projects;

  • Repairs, replaces, and maintains all city owned lighting, including holiday lights;

  • Assists with city park electric systems and equipment;

  • Assists with general setup for special events;

  • Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical tools and equipment required for maintenance work while utilizing necessary PPE to complete tasks;

  • Performs routine maintenance and repair of city facilities to ensure upkeep and safety; including general carpentry, soldering, pipefitting, welding, fabrication, electrical, painting, plumbing, heating/air conditioning, and other mechanical repair work; and

  • Operates various equipment, including aerial bucket and truck, backhoe, and safety belt and equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This is a non-supervisory position.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High school graduation or its equivalent plus two years of field experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge Of

Electrical system management principles, practices, procedures, and safety codes; and standard office practices and procedures; various voltage issues and maintenance.  Methods, practices, and equipment used in plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC work; safe operations of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repair equipment; safe operation of hand and electric tools.

Skill/Ability To

Maintain and repair electrical systems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; communicate effectively; operate equipment and tools used in maintaining and repairing electrical systems; and read and understand manuals, policies, and other documents.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A valid Texas commercial driver’s license (B CDL) is required. Employees who do not have a Class B CDL (Commercial) Texas driver’s license must successfully obtain this license within 180 days of hire. The City of Brenham offers an in-house training program to obtain this license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity, work with tools and equipment, drive vehicles or equipment, perform repetitive motions, perform work involving the entire body, stand, and walk and balance on all types of surfaces.  The employee is required to bend from the waist, crouch, or squat, kneel, sit, crawl, climb, twist, and reach with arms and hands.  The employee is required to perform job duties from various heights, lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds, such as materials and equipment, and must carry, push, and pull materials.  The employee must be able to see clearly, with or without vision correction, in close situations, at a distance, and peripherally, and be able to adjust focus.

The work environment requires that the employee exercise caution at all times and adhere to safety standards to avoid the risk of personal injury. The employee is exposed to outdoor elements, loud noises, vibrations, and respiratory hazards such as dust, gases, and chemicals.  The employee may be required to work with live electric wires.  The work environment is noisy and distracting.
